I put urea on my hair! What happened next?

Hey, hi, hello!

It’s been a few months now since I started experimenting with more advanced hair care. The last time I added urea to my favorite hair mask. What happened later went far beyond my expectations. If you are curious what you can win by exposing your hair to such treatment, please finish reading my today’s post and then begin running experiments with various substances on your own hair.

Humectants for hair

Humectants are substances responsible for bonding water in hair and react with humidity. If we use them incorrectly, then instead of moisturizing, shine and smoothness we will dehydrate the hair. Therefore, you must follow with emollients always after supplying the hair with humectants. And the humectant that I used the last time was urea.

What is urea?

Well, urea is a substance mainly used for medicinal and beautifying purposes. The effects it produces are strictly connected with its concentration. To demonstrate, 10% and more exfoliates epidermal cells, but when between 5% and 10% urea moisturizes, smooths out and intensifies shine. As far as I’m concerned, urea is commonly added to skin care products: hand creams, body balms or foot baths.

How to apply humectants to hair?

There are three ways which you can apply humectants to hair in:

  • as a constituent of masks and conditioners – combine urea with either cosmetic and apply to hair, or use to remove a beauty oil that you’ve earlier;
  • as a constituent of a shampoo – thin the shampoo with warm water and then add urea;
  • as a hair rinse – mix urea with preboiled tap water and then pour over washed hair.

Benefits of using urea on hair

What effects did urea deliver to my hair? Thanks to this substance my hair becomes more shiny, soft and bouncy, deeply nourished. I applied a conditioner mixed with urea to washed strands. I washed the hair again after 20 minutes, but that time I used a gentle shampoo. I let the hair air dry.

Urea on hair for the beginners

Fancy using urea? Follow my pieces of advice listed below:

  1. At the beginning, add just a pinch of urea so as to find out how your hair reacts to it.
  2. Don’t apply urea every time you wash hair – it’s better to use it every fifth washing.
  3. Urea is white powder or granulate that has to be crumbled. Only then can you add it to water, shampoo or mask.
  4. Remember to add urea to just one hair care product.
  5. Urea is available online only.
