The sun: facts and myths. Is sunbathing really that bad?

It makes our bodies produce vitamin D, gives the skin a nice goldish color, triggers production of happiness hormones, makes our surrounding colorful and beautiful. Sadly, on the other hand, it may mess up our bodies leading to various complications. What should we know before exposing to the sunlight?

The sun treats acne

Too bad, it isn’t true. Only antibiotics can cure acne. The sun dries out the pimples and it does the same to skin. What happens next? Due to radiation, the skin thickens, sebum glands are blocked, the skin is dehydrated. Consequently, you face to acne breakouts and dark pigmentation spots.

Sunbathing is healthy

Thanks to the sun, the body produces vitamin D but this doesn’t mean we should burn in the sun all day long. We have to keep it moderate because overexposure to the sunlight causes DNA changes and skin cancer. You can get tanned but keep it safe, wear a hat, avoid the noon time and always have a sunscreen on you (literally!).

Speaking of sunscreen, how often to apply it?

It’s wrong to think that one application of a sunblock protects us throughout the day. The sun filters do protect us yet just for a specified time and you can check that on the packaging: you multiply the SPF number by 20 minutes which gives you the time you can safely sunbathe without the occurrence of redness.

Using one sunscreen for a few years

You should use up your cream within one summer. During the next year the filters lose stability and will no longer save your skin against the sunlight. To make things worse, if you don’t store it properly, you might end up with skin irritation.

You can do without a sunblock in a car or under an umbrella

Too bad, it’s not true. The sunrays easily get through the glass and the material that umbrellas are made of and reach the skin. It happens also when you wear long-sleeve blouses or sit at home by the window. Is there a remedy? Fix a special film on the windows and wear sun protective clothes.

Sunscreen clogs skin pores

It might happen if you choose the wrong product. Nowadays, there are so many sun protective creams we can choose from. You can easily suit them to the needs of your skin type.
